How to Wash Your Face Without a Sink

Sometimes the sink is not an option. You are at the gym, on a plane, in a car, or somewhere between the office and dinner. Here is what people actually use, and what each one does and does not do.

1. A single face wipe

Quick and portable, and it genuinely lifts oil and sweat. The limitation is that nothing rinses it off, so the cleanser stays on your skin along with whatever it picked up. Fine as a holdover. Not the same as washing.

2. Micellar water and a cotton pad

Good at lifting, and gentle. Two practical problems away from home: you are carrying a bottle and a bag of pads, and most micellar products tell you to rinse afterwards, which brings you back to needing a sink.

3. A water bottle and your hands

People do this more than they admit. It rinses, which is more than a wipe does, but there is no cleanser involved so you are moving water over oil, and you end up with wet sleeves and no towel.

4. A two-step wipe system

One wipe to cleanse, a second to rinse it back off. It is the only portable option that does both halves of what a sink does. You get the cleansing step and the carrying-away step without running water and without a towel.

A few things that help regardless

  • Work from the centre outwards. Nose and forehead collect the most oil.
  • Do not scrub. Pressure does not improve cleansing and it irritates skin, especially around the eyes.
  • Let your face air dry rather than using a gym or airplane towel.
  • Keep one in the bag you always carry, not the one you pack for trips. The whole point is having it when you did not plan ahead.
